K9T was applied in NuJiang River Water Infrastructure

2012-08-15

Nu River Grand Canyon is located in Northwest of Nu River State, Yunnan Province, China. This 300 km long canyon has an elevation of 3000 meters and the fall from mountaintop to river surface of most section is over 2000 meters, deeper than the famous Colorado Grand Canyon. This depth makes Nu River Grand Canyon seldom visited and it is titled “Eastern Grand Canyon”.

Dam Design

The local government is investing in the building of water infrastructure. But in the preliminary measurement before construction, they’ve faced problems: High humidity of working environment, great temperature changes and low temperature for long time. All these make it impossible to use conventional survey instruments so they are in urgent need of easy-using and efficient GNSS equipments.

After testing of several brands of instruments, KOLIDA K9T comes into their sight. This model was designed for complex and hard environmental conditions for surveyors. It can collect the signal of GPS and GLONASS systems and acquire positioning information at the real time, accuracy can reach 8mm+1ppm. The measurement of one control point can be done within few minutes even 10 seconds. Special utility software for topography measurement and water path grid design on controller enables you to do office work in field.

After basic operation training, we begin the tour against the current of Nu River. The actual environment is more complicated than expected: Cliffs besides the narrow muddy path, heavily covered sky and sudden cold rain, the minimum temperature is minus fifteen degree Celsius. We set the base station on the mountainside and mountaintop as well, extend the pole of rover up to over 2.5 meters to ensure that it can receive the correction signal from the base station. Work team is sometimes on the mountaintop, sometimes at the foot for seeking a control point.

During the whole-day measurement, customer realizes that it’s a wise decision of using GNSS receivers because GNSS receivers suit this job perfectly. Satellite signal is received just after power on, within 20 seconds the float data becomes fixed, this cheers everyone up. Under the guaranty of two units 2500mAh batteries, the instruments work continually from noon to 9 p.m. When final result comes out in the office, everyone is satisfied with the accuracy.

In general, building of water infrastructure, like dam, power station or flood control facilities, RTK GNSS receiver is mainly used on topography measurements, water path grid design and set-out. During the measurement, after the base station is set, several rover stations can work together at the same time, with rapid initialization and getting fixed data immediately. No matter in mountainous areas or forest, a good GNSS receiver will be reliable workmate for water conservancy workers.
